Always be wary of drunks in the stinkpots. Assume they're 'driving' impaired, that way you won't be suprised. I say that because quite a few times through the years I've had near misses from those guys. I mean, it IS kinda hard for them to see you when you got a mast and sails sticking 30-odd feet up in the air!! Easy to overlook us from a 1/4 mile away, and all through their approach on us. Perhaps it's our blazing speed that confuses them?

In any event, always sorry to hear about someone dying, regardless of their not thinking they should wear a life preserver when impacting SUV sized rocks in the water at 45mph. Best wishes to his loved ones...

That's an odd story. The six were rescued very quickly, two (probably) wearing life jackets were left in the water, un-located. Must have somehow been injured early, perhaps snapped neck? Just unconscious and the swells enough to keep driving water into their mouths as they were bouyed face up?

Poor families. Geez. Hope we eventually get an update on this. A crew of eight (8) men is rather indicative of a pretty large craft, with lots of rail meat for the high side... wonder how she knocked down? Crowding to much sail?

I will say that, in heavy weather, I ALWAYS have the hand held VHF radio clipped to my life jacket, along with other gear ready to go.

It was a Kiwi 35, Wingnuts out of Saginaw. Very unusual hull shape. Another boat was dismasted. So far 30 DNFs. More storms today. Milwaukee boat involved in rescue.
