I like this idea! I don't have a steel barge though I did hear of a guy in the Mediterranean building an island out of capped off plastic bottles... Anybody have some spare time??

Hmmm... how about plastic 55gal drums. Build modular units that could be towed out and added whenever someone went.

I like the landscaping idea. Palm trees on Lake Mich would be awesome.

I have a feeling it would become a popular destination. Soon it would be over run and could be sold to a casino company.

Great thread. Gary has a daydream, Briana brings the financial/legal world in, then Ev reminds us that all good ideas eventually get bought up.

I prefer to think of Love Island as a quiet, free place to sit under a palm tree sipping a barley pop and being away from the financial/legal/business world.

Heck, I'd declare it my own country. THen if it broke free and landed in Wisconsin it could be an international incident instead of an insurance claim. . .

There is nothing half so worth doing as simply messing about in boats

I will ask my son and my son-in-law about this dream. They both have "ins" at state government.

They should be able to categorize this for us...like who would we talk to and who's jurisdiction is it in. Parks dept?, Harbor commission?

My biggest concern is the weather on the lake. I know that when they do normal dredging with a barge they scurry up the river if there are big waves.

Shuttling our island back and forth to suit the weather would be very expensive.

A run-away barge could theoretically do a lot of damage.

Up until now I have been picturing this off of Bradford, but MAYBE it makes more sense inside the breakwater, south of Hohn before you get to SShore. It would get less weather in there.

This is starting to sound like Waterworld

I'd love that trimaran he had in the movie!

I used to dream of having that boat Kevin Costner had in waterworld! Used to drive by and look at it anchored out off of Hawaii when they were filming it. At least, everyone said that was the onne, and it certainly looked beat up enough to be it.

No... I seriously would put a floating island out there if I had the money. If posted properly (private property, no tresspassing... and maybe something about 'at your own risk') you'd be free of idiots drwning, getting hurt, etc. Besides, there's a LOT of lawyers with big boats in McKinley that would probably LOVE to get the posting correct for me... as long as I allowed them to tie up to it.

Yep... all I need is a pretty large anchor, a couple of shots of chain, a permanent mooring and a serious length of, say 5" or 6" double braided nylon for a hawser, and I'm good to go! I know it's just a 'clown around' daydream... but you tell me that I couldn't get a few DOZENS of sailors willing to drop by and help put a few feet of soil into her, or clean/paint the hull, etc. It would be 'THE' place to go to for every boater around here, and even from Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, etc. How sad that there's no islands in the southern 90% of the lake?

And I do believe that, that far out, it wouldn't necessarily need to be pulled each winter.

So, there's a club project for you! Let's pool our miniscule finances and buy/build a swimming raft. Put some cleats on the sides and some Walmart fenders, and we're good to go, LOLOLOL's!! Call it 3-4 inches of topsoil and some grass seed... Guy, you're in charge of bringing the beverages! Ev! You get us a plastic Palm tree for it!

Too much, LOL's!
And once it takes, off, we'll sell it to an Indian tribe for conversion to a Casino...

This reminds me of the guy who claimed an old English WWII Anti-Air craft station in the English channel as his own country. I'll have to see if I can find the link.

Hahaha.. Spring fever is already upon us. My wife is getting sick of hearing me talk about all the preparations I have to make. She keeps saying "It's February! Who's thinking about sailing right now?"
