Do you want to go sailing? 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 6
I have tomorrow (Friday 5/15/09) free and expect to hit the lake. T-storms and showers aren't supposed to be until later in the day (afternoon and evening). Anyone interested, feel free to 'PM' a message of interest along with your telephone number to me, and I'll check in later tonight. Otherwise...

Bon Voyage, people!

Gary,

Maybe we'll see you on the water.

The boat goes into the KK river at 0900 hrs. At least that's the plan.

Hope the weather stays as forcast.

Al, what's the name of your vessal again? As for the weather, I hope they're calling it right. Last I heard, sunny/clouds with about 15 knots air. Sounds great to me, I'll have to pack a lunch. 'Course, my last two times, that medium air equated to about 6-7 knots, and 2.4 knots, respectively. Oh, well, gotta love the ALL of it!

Did you get out Gary? Joe and I got in about 1-1/2 hr sail at the end of the afternoon. We put a reef in the main and hoisted the #3 genny and had plenty of sail. Our first sail of the season!

Well pleased with myself! (It's the little things...) 2 Years, 8 Months ago Karma: 6
I am so wedged in on the mooring, that I can almost always NOT fall either on, or off, the mooring under sail. Just to congested, vessals FAR to close to me. However, McKinley is not packed tight as yet, and I find myself guilty of what many a sailor before me has done! That is, simply relying on the OB to get me on and off the mooring, thus after years, getting somewhat 'leery' of the faulty old rusted skills... perpetuating a cycle which tends to use the OB more and more. So, while nothing to many of you guys... but I came in under medium air, gybed around that... whatever that ugly twin hulled 'thing' is near me, luffed, and made my mooring. Not bad after years of relying on the OB! I would have only overrun the mooring bouy by about 6'-8' had I not snubbed her tight. Yep, a basic 'rookie' thing, but, being solo, was quite pleased with myself. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to practise this some more before congestion sets in, and I really should practise coming pierside under sail as well. Chris/Guy/anyone, when we go out, would you mind a few minutes, us making a few 'runs' at the pier before heading out?

I hate the fact that I've come to rely on the OB so much!!

I too am reliant on the iron sail too much to get to my mooring ball. I really need to practice this as I have only done it once. So if any one can help me do this it would be appreciated.

The sailor responds to the subtle shifting of the wind, the imperceptible ebbing of the tide. He changes course. He trims his sheets. He sails.

Wayne, if nothing else, lets get together. It's not difficult, just one of those things... at least for me... that got easier and easier (and easier!) to simply fall on/off the mooring using the OB. I've seen and heard to many guys speak of this very same thing happening to them after they got an OB. Perhaps if we stored the OB in the garage all season...

I've found that using the mooring lines float w/ the f.g. spar makes it a lot easier to pick up my mooring under sail or motoring for that manner.

It is getting very crowded in the mooring area. A gusty west wind usually makes me use the motor. I've started practicing motoring thru the area backwards to hone my motoring skills in congested areas.

You guys have convinced me to give sailing off/on the mooring a try. I've been reluctant to attempt it due to inexperience (another word for SCARED).

I know I'll have the engine running in neutral (JUST IN CASE). Don't want to make a Tursiops imprint on someone elses boat.

FWIW: I hope to be out tomorrow afternoon/evening. I'm always looking to learn new stuff from other sailors.
