TOPIC: Queen's Cup 2010

Queen's Cup 2010 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 5
Since I saw a thread starting to talk about the Queen's Cup I thought I'd start a new thread for the race here.

Who's doing the race this year? This year it goes to Grand Haven. Bring lots of fenders if you plan on tying up. The retaining wall in the channel has recessed metal sides that are really deep and wreak havoc on topsides.

I'd really like to enter WW in the race, but it depends on a few factors. Lance might be coming again this year but this time with his wife and little girl. Maybe we'd do the race, but it might be more fun to stick around summerfest with the families.

I also need to get insurance on the boat and I want to do so without paying out my arse for a survey. I think the B29 has a phrf rating of 220. I'd start a couple divisions ahead of Tursiops but I'm sure I'd see you guys soon as you flew past

Gary, I was on a site today showing the average phrf ratings for boats... the Santana 23 had a rating of 173! I think that's right in the same range as the J24 and Merit 25.

Chris, that would be so cool to take WW into the race. If the weather cooperated, Lance's wife could possibly be hooked too.

As far as the phrf rating for WW, I'm thinking that would be about Tursiops speed with my shoal keel, old sails, and roller furled main. 140ish was way too fast a rating for my boat as it stands much less with me as the skipper.

I am very close to pulling the trigger on a new genoa like maybe a 110 instead of the MONSTER that's one there.

Nahh your waterline length makes for a much faster ride... The b29 only has a draft of 4'6" which I'm guessing isn't much deeper than yours.

I'm interested to play with all the sails WW came with. There's a brand new 180 that I'd really like to try out. That's a lot of canvas. She's rigged for a spinnaker but has no chute. I'll have to hang around SSYC and see if any racers have a chute they deem "tired". I'd have to get good at using it before the race tho...

I can understand your desire for a 110. That sail is a monster, but it sure catches a lot of air!

Chris-
FWIW the Alberg 29 PHRF is 225. I'm guessing your B29 is similar.

Cool - yeah they've got to be really close on everything. Still waiting to hear about insurance.. Our insurance lady was supposed to get back to us on it.. but haven't heard anything.

Chris, you absolutely will not be able to get insurance without a survey done. Sorry, sucks, but I went through that years ago.

As for my Santana 2023... I have a buddy up in the Metro-Twin Cities, he lost a mast a few years ago. Insurace paid for a J24 mast which he mounted. Upshot was, his first year he beat a J24. Non-typical, though, he the first to state it was an inexperienced J24 crew, brand new owner, etc.

As for me, I don't race. But even if I did, I'd not even try to run against a J24.

Chris, though I don't race, your phrf rating seemed off. It is. I do not have a Santana 23... I have the 2023A. The rating is 222. If I drop the standard rig, go for the taller 2023'R' rig, my rating would be something like 172.

Not that I understand what that all means, lol's!

One day, over a beer, I'll let you explain it all to me. As I understand it, that'd make our boats a dead even heat?

Gotcha... I always get your boat confused accusing it of being shorter than it is and such --

I don't know a whole lot about PHRF rating other than what I've read. This link gives a good description. The one thing to note is that it assumes all yachts are sailed by a crack Olympic sailing team with functioning top notch hardware.

This is certainly not the case with my boat or skipper, particularly the skipper. The other factor that PHRF doesn't take into consideration is conditions. You'd have a huge advantage in light air which seems all too common on race days. Allegedly the B29 would be favored in heavy air but that doesn't take into account your penchant for submerging your toe rails and the weakened condition of my rig

I still plan on doing this race if Lance isn't coming that weekend. Anybody else going to participate?

The Queen's Cup? I mentioned to Al a couple months ago I'd love crewing for him if he decided to do it again, but never heard back from him (I don't think). If he's not going to do it, I'd be happy to crew for anyone else... assuming that I am able to attend it, that is...
