I don't know if I've just succumbed to the kool-aid or what but when I look at boats, the ones that always catch my eye are Rhodes designs. The overhangs at the stern just really add an element of beauty that is missing from most of the modern era boats with 3 feet of freeboard and no overhangs. My wife bought me a book of sailing photography chock full of 1940s and 50s era racers. The knockabouts are just stunners!

I wish I could find some of the photos from the book I mentioned... But you get the idea. I think this pic is of a Rhodes Evergreen 36. I've seen others like the Dark Harbor 20 that are more reasonable.. Even that Schock 26 has some of the characteristics of the knockabouts... plus it's fiberglass.

I also admire the overhangs and smooth curves of that era. I know they exist because of an arbitrary rating rule and the inability to bend wood in some shapes.

In addition to Rhodes (and I told you I fell in love with the swiftsure in Muskegon), try Nat Hereshoff (sp), or more modern try Chuck Paine.

There is nothing half so worth doing as simply messing about in boats

That Swiftsure really is pretty. I did some looking on Nat Hereshoff... Nice looking stuff. Halsey was his son? Grandson? He designed the B29.

Here's one of Nat's America's Cup boats - Defender. Can you imagine sailing something like that? Amazing! Look at the boom on that thing.. Gotta be some nasty weather helm with that thing!

Halsey was his grandson. I don't think he designed the B29. It is an Alberg design. Halsey designed the Bristol 29.9.

According to http://www.bristolowners.org/29/bristol29.html It was Halsey.

After further review, and before you guys straighten me out. . .Halsey is credited with both the 29 and 29.9

Try L. Francis Herreshoff as well (Nat's son, Halsey's dad). Rozinante, Marco Polo, ticonderoga and others. . .
