Yikes.

I am afraid of Bradford Beach.
I hit something with my keel when I was WAAAAAY out from there.

Actually just north of Bradford.

Nothing on charts, perhaps a Russian submarine.

No damage.

That's about where 'Love's Rock', is, isn't it? I've looked for it through the years, but never found it.

Well if that's what it is, it's less than 6' down.

I got hung up at Bradford Beach as well... but it wasn't because of a mysterious shoal or rock. I was so enamored with showing off my boating skills to all the suntanners and v-ball players that I completely forgot that as you approach land the depth of water decreases. I was only going about 2 or 3 knots but got jarred forward as I hit the sand/muck. Luckily the wind was coming off the shore and I was able to backwind the main and hang off the side and get myself out of there.

I've heard about that rock though, but thankfully have never found it.

The history of 'Love Rock':

Apparently, it used to be VERY visible, sticking OUT of the water, so much so that no boater really ever feared running into it. Named Love Rock, apparently because boys would swim out with spray paint, write "I love so-and-so" on it.

Some local political idiot years ago decided that it was an EYE sore... so ordered it to be 'blown up' with dynamite.

Problem was (obviously) the idiots only blew the top off... so now, there's nothing visible, making it a navigational hazard.

And the idiots who did it won't go out and finsih the job, removeing another 10 feet or so of the rock.

Anyway, I've never seen it, so if anyone can point it out to me, I'd appreciate it. As stated, I've looked for it (safe with my boat. Well... sorta safe... unless I hit it, of course, lol's!

I think it was Jon Breczak (sp?) of the sailing center who told me the history of that rock, though I could be wrong.

Interesting history lesson. Leave it to a politician to turn something that stood for love into something that you would hate to find.

Hey Chris, at least you had the prowess to get yourself off. Bet you even made it look like you meant to do it too.

I believe Love's Rock is visible in the satellite image on google earth. Take a look.

I did worse than Chris. I was sailing a Soling through South Shore one fall day, staying in the channel. . .

At McKinley the channel is between the bouys and the wall. Apparently not at South Shore. . .

Thankfully I have ample resources t o make the boat heel while sitting on the end of the boom.

There is nothing half so worth doing as simply messing about in boats

Interesting article about the formation.

It was constructed as a water intake in the 1890s
